I remember the first theatre production I ever saw. I was ten years old and my Auntie took me to see The Music Man at the local high school. Marian was played by a high school senior who lived a few doors down from us on our country road. It was magical.

I can still see the sage green backdrop, the period costumes, and the voices – the beautiful voices! I even remember some of the choreography from Marian the Librarian. 

For most of my younger years, I feasted on  old movies and musicals; but what I saw that evening in that high school auditorium was life changing. 

We are lucky to live in a community with a thriving theatre scene. What seems to have fallen by the wayside is a convenient and consistent source for theatre news, previews, and reviews. 

As newspapers focus more on digital platforms, we’ve seen coverage of local theatre dwindle. A preview here and there just isn’t enough for the amount of information theatre lovers crave.

Living in a time where strong community is essential to our emotional well-being, theatre has the power to bring us together like nothing else. This is the inspiration for Spotlight Michiana.

Our plan for this site is to explore the community theatres throughout the area. We hope to report on their behind-the-scenes stories, including the never-ending struggle for funding, the hurdles of finding affordable venues, and the impact of technology and digital media on small theatre companies. We also intend to share what you can expect when you see a specific show, the standouts, and if it is worth the price of admission.
